Step 4: WWF Royal Rumble
Forgive me readers for I have sinned. It’s been four weeks since my last rehab session. As you might have guessed, I’ve fallen off the wagon. I can’t shake my Destiny addiction and my rehab is suffering. In an attempt to get back on the wagon, I’ve temporarily skipped steps 2 and 3 in favor of step 4, the quicker-to-beat WWF Royal Rumble. It might be a cop out, but what do you expect from an addict?
WWF Royal Rumble is an incredibly simple, yet charming game. There are twelve wrestlers, all of whom have the same basic move set along with a character-specific special move. Of the four face buttons, one runs, one punches the opponent, one kicks the opponent, and one grapples the opponent. Once in grapple, the player has four moves from which to choose (choke, body slam, suplex, Irish whip) based on which face button they push. Though simple, the actual matches can be pretty fun thanks in large part to a great roster of early 90s wrestling icons and an array of different match types. Being able to take the likes of Yokozuna, Ric Flair, Macho Man Randy Savage, Mr. Perfect, and many others through single, tag, triple tag, brawl, tournament, and Royal Rumble matches is a nostalgia trip that’s worth taking, even if the controls and move sets feel incredibly dated. This was a nice palate cleanser to get me back on track.
